On September 9th, 2013, a local television network in Manila aired a recorded speech by Nick Vujicic, a globally renowned motivational speaker born without limbs.
My friend, seated on the couch, invited me to watch Nick on TV with her. Though I didn’t initially pay much attention, curiosity led me to join her. The following day, I felt compelled to search for Nick on YouTube. As I watched his videos, speeches, and interviews, I witnessed how audiences, young and old, were profoundly moved by his testimony, courage, and unwavering faith in God despite his physical challenges.
Nicholas James Vujicic, born in Australia on December 4, 1982, without arms and legs but with two small feet—one of which has two toes—utilizes his unique abilities for writing, typing, working, and playing. Nick dives, swims, writes, cooks, types 43 words per minute, and plays drum pedals, tennis, golf, and soccer. He can comb his hair, brush his teeth, prepare meals, shave, and make or answer phone calls. He has even tried water skiing and skydiving. Amid his busy speaking engagements around the world, he takes good care of his wife and their little boy.
In many of his testimonies, Nick has revealed how hopeless and devastated he felt, especially at the age of eight when he attempted to drown himself in a bathtub due to constant bullying. His love for his parents, however, stopped him from ending his life. Good parenting played a crucial role in inspiring him and instilling a zest for life at a young age. At seventeen, he founded his non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs, to further his advocacy.
Nick not only performs activities that individuals with arms and legs do but also makes significant contributions to society by offering hope and encouragement to those in need. He has spoken before groups of legislators, company executives, students, physically challenged individuals, and diverse audiences worldwide, emphasizing the importance of acceptance and gratitude. His faith in God is immense, enabling him to survive and further his advocacy.
Reflecting on Nick’s life, I asked myself, “What have I done with my limbs?” I am thankful to have been born with them, but I realized I could show more appreciation and gratitude by using them as intended.
